Author Jim Chastain has died

Jim Chastain, author of I Survived Cancer But Never Won the Tour de France, died Thursday morning after a long battle with cancer. Charlotte Lankard, a longtime friend of Jim’s and a contributor to The Oklahoman has written a touching reminder of the legacy he has left behind:

He had a way with words and somehow knew humor could help ease the awkwardness. Besides that, you never had to pretend he was a one-armed man. He flaunted it. Not that he liked it, mind you, but it was what it was and he kept moving forward. So did we.

He reminded us, however, through his poetry, that life is made up of changes and filled with unexpected turns.

Through his own awareness that life could be brief, he reminded us to live it fully.

Our deepest sympathies to Jim's family, friends, and relatives. He will be missed.

Memorial service for Jim Chastain will be Tuesday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. in Norman. Memorial contributions can be made to the Jim Chastain Memorial Fund at First Bank and Trust in Norman. This money will go toward a college fund for Jim’s two children.

Texas students inspired by "The Ultimate Gift"

Junior high school students in Laredo, Texas were inspired by Jim Stovall's book The Ultimate Gift to give back to the community this holiday season:
"Well we first brought a book called 'The Ultimate Gift', which teaches the students how to reinforce the values they learn at home. Then talking to the students we began to discuss about the family and age and that took us to the topic of elderly people, the respect they deserve for their wisdom, and that is how this idea came about," Uralde explained.
Read the rest of the story at the Laredo Sun. Also: don't forget about Jim Stovall's new book The Sound of Honor, in stores now.

Hawk author Barry Friedman has a new "Barry Friedman at Large" column in the December issue of TulsaPeople:
Sen. Tom Coburn attached an amendment to credit card legislation (passed by Congress and signed by the president) that allows loaded guns and semi-automatic weapons to be brought into national parks. And one of those national parks? The Oklahoma City National Memorial, whose mission statement reads, “May all who leave here know the impact of violence.”

The senator will now introduce legislation allowing surface-to-air missiles into meetings with credit card company representatives.

Jim Stovall's "The Ultimate Gift" in India

Jim Stovall, author of Hawk's newest offering The Sound of Honor, has already reached millions of people across the globe, but now it seems his words are finding an audience with the school children of India:

A popular pick among teens and pre-teens is the classic Chicken Soup for the Soul series for its simple, real-life stories, each of which conveys a deeper message. Other titles parents might want on their child's shelf include The Secret to Teen Power by Paul Harrington, Five Minute Tales of Wisdom by Kiran Aggarwal, The Ultimate Gift and The Ultimate Life by Jim Stovall. "Motivational books help children a lot, particularly those in class IX and X. The quotes, simple stories and exercises help them learn," says Dr Madhura Phadke, principal of Pawar Public School, Bhandup.

New Fiction from K.D. Wentworth: "The Gender Plague"

There's a new short fiction piece from Hawk author K.D. Wentworth up on DayBreak Magazine called "The Gender Plague." From DayBreak's introduction:
The premise—a virus that causes a person to change sex overnight—might be a bit wonky (although, with all the crazy performance-enhancement drugs out there I’m not so sure), but this story is a great example that it’s not really the idea itself that matters, but what you do with it. KD takes this crazy (well, it’s becoming less and less crazy in this modern world) notion and runs with it. She runs with it so well that the end result feels completely natural.
K. D. Wentworth currently is the editor for the Writers of the Future Contest. Her novelette, "Kaleidoscope" was nominated for the 2008 Nebula Awards.
